Electric Violet: In Real Life

An album about relationships and love in the Internet age, In Real Life opens with a sound familiar to anyone who logged on to the World Wide Web in its early years: a dial-up internet connection. From there, listeners who still remember what dial-up sounded like will be transported back to the pre-Internet era, when dance, pop and rock music blended into each other and the most popular radio station in town played Van Halen, Duran Duran and Howard Jones back to back to back. Electric Violet's retro vibe is contagious, even as the band unveils a hashtag (#LoveAnyway) in the video for "Heart Undone" — the album's most memorable tune that begins with the sound of the needle gently caressing vinyl and proceeds to reveal U2 and New Order influences. File this under harmless alternative-rock fun, but with the acknowledgement that Electric Violet embraces everything from borderline prog (listen to the instrumental "Berlin") to Brit pop. If that's your thing, this is your album.
