Dirty Fingers: 250 Dollars
The five year journey Gabriel Grisanti has been on closes its opening chapter with the release of the debut album from his band Dirty Fingers, 250 Dollars the culmination of his determination to write songs, and find like minded souls to realise his musical dreams. The band name comes from the pick-ups on one of Grisanti's guitars, the dirty sound they produced also fuelling the beefed up sleazy sound to be found. As is so often the case, the one piece of the jigsaw that has always alluded Grisanti is a frontman capable of matching his expectations, and as the likes of Ginger Wildheart had to, he eventually concluded he was going to have to take on that role himself. He makes a decent fist of it too, bursting with energy and attitude – he may never be the best singer in the world, but that's not always been a block in the path to super-stardom. Musically think an aggressive Michael Monroe and you won't be a million miles away, Grisanti and Riccardo Menini a mean guitar pairing who seem to thrive on chunky steamrollering riffs, which introduce "Back To The Move", "Heroes' Day" and "I Am" in quite stunning style. The melodies and hooks don't always live up to that top billing and yet it certainly sets the tone in sure footed manner. "Black Magic Night" shows a deeper side to the Dirty Fingers approach, a slow build adding atmosphere to the feel good romps, while on occasion, the overall attack suddenly becomes much heavier than anticipated, a few reverential nods to Metallica an unexpected aside.
Give this album a few spins and you'll start to unravel a decent mix of anthems, angst and attitude. 250 Dollars may not quite be the big pay day you were hoping for, but it brings plenty value and will sure provide a good night on the town.
