Howls of Ebb: The Marrow Veil

I've been reading quite a bit lately about everyday aesthetics. I am especially interested in things that challenge the common divide between high and low art. As a metal fan, I suppose I have a natural inclination toward pulling that divide apart. There are obvious aesthetic considerations within heavy metal music that need to be contemplated and understood. Even so, I have always held fast to Henry James's claims that all art still has to pass the liking test. I can understand something, maybe even learn to appreciate it, but if I don't like it, really don't like it, then there's a problem. This album did not pass my liking test. I've listened to it carefully, so it won't due to say that I simply don't get it. It's more accurate to say that I'm just the wrong audience for it. The music here is interesting, but it's mostly comprised of its own spin on noise and ambient sounds. I loved the opening clip sentencing someone to being buried alive. I wondered whether the music here was supposed to be an attempt to capture what it would be like to reconcile that sentence with one's sense of reality. Somehow, I doubt it, but it would still be a cool idea. The music here does succeed at being disturbing and chaotic. It will certainly intrigue those listeners who are looking for something like this. It's odd to say this, but I preferred the latest release by Gnaw Their Tongues to this. I'm not sure what that says about me, but there it is.
