It's been nearly 10 years since the last studio album of original material from hard rock act The Lizards, but with Reptilicus Maximus, it appears the wait was well worth it. A 'super group' of sorts, The Lizards are comprised of vocalist Mike DiMeo (ex-Riot, Masterplan), drummer Bobby Rondinelli (ex-Rainbow, Black Sabbath, Blue Oyster Cult), guitarist Patrick Klein, bassist Randy Pratt (Cactus), and keyboard player Scott 'The Doctor' Treibitz. This new album contains 11 bluesy, hard rock tunes filled with tasty guitar work, driving rhythms, powerful vocals, and memorable melodies.
As good a musical act as they are, the band have enlisted the help of some old friends here on Reptilicus Maximus to drop in some solos and vocals along the way. Canadian guitar legend Frank Marino lends his signature style to the bluesy "Evil Eyes", while current UFO axe-master Vinnie Moore shows up on "Crash" with some nasty licks to this hard charging but textured heavy rocker. "Ton on the One" is a raucous hard rock number featuring guest solos from David Lanik, and none other than Glenn Hughes shows up on bass and vocals alongside DeMeo on the moody but potent "Miracle Man", a real thumper of a track dripping with atmosphere but stacked with groove. Elsewhere, look for bluesy funk on "Incurable" (complete with scorching harmonica from Pratt), Humble Pie meets Cactus on the 70s styled blues rock of "Crawlin' King Snake" , a distant cousin to Led Zeppelin's "Kashmir" on "In the Pleasure Dome" (featuring a stellar DiMeo vocal), and rumbling heavy rock with "Wild West".
If you love '70s styled hard rock with thunderous grooves, there's no reason why this latest from The Lizards won't occupy some serious time in your CD player or digital media device. If they come to a venue near you, be sure to check them out as they are a serious live act as well.
