Legendary vocalist/bassist John Wetton needs no introduction, after many years as a member of bands such as Asia, King Crimson, and UK, but he's also released a number of solid solo recordings that focus mostly on the pop and melodic rock side of things. Many of the highlights from his six solo releases are included here on the 2CD set Studio Recordings Anthology, a fun collection of songs that showcase not only Wetton's unmistakable vocal style but also his ability write tunes in a variety of styles.
With songs from the albums Arkangel, Sinister, Rock of Faith, Battle Lines, Raised in Captivity, and Caught in a Crossfire spread out over 2 discs, you get a more than healthy sampling from each of those solo outings. The 'who's who' of guest musicians is also just as strong, with John Mitchell, Steve Morse, Bob Marlette, Greg Bisonette, Geoff Downes, Michael Landau, Simon Kirke, Robert Fripp, Steve Lukather, Clive Nolan, Martin Barre, Steve Hackett, Billy Sherwood, and many others among the star studded line-up. Ballads mix with hard rockers and more pop/melodic themed songs, with some of the highlights being "Caught In the Crossfire", "Say It Ain't So", "The Last Thing On My Mind", "Another Twist of the Knife", "Battle Lines", "Heart of Darkness", "Take Me to the Waterline", and the emotional "Woman". Fans of his work in Asia will most certainly enjoy what's on display throughout this set, as his soaring vocals and penchant for the hook laden melody line are both front and center at all times.
With 32 songs in total, there's a ton of strong material here, making this a great purchase for any fan of Wetton who perhaps hasn't yet investigated his solo work.
