Formed from the ashes of post-punk darlings Beastmilk, Grave Pleasures is the new band featuring former 'milkers' Mat 'Kvohst' McNerney (vocals) and Valtteri Arino (bass), along with guitarist's Linnea Olsson (ex-The Oath) & Juho Vanhanen, and drummer Uno Bruniusson (In Solitude). To describe the music of Grave Pleasures is somewhat of a challenge, as the band incorporate elements of pop, punk, gothic, metal, alternative, and new wave into a sound that's twangy, catchy, gloomy, and most importantly, rocking. Just give a listen to the irresistible "Futureshock", a bouncy, upbeat rocker with a great hook, or the near Brit-pop of "Worn Threads" for a sampling of the varied attack these guys have come up with. Green Day-meets-The B52's on the raucous "Taste the Void" , and the dark "No Survival", with its near surf styled lead guitar and heavy riffs to go along with a catchy melody, is as odd as it is endearing. Other highlights include the memorable "New Hip Moon", the Telecaster twang of "Crying Wolves", and the offbeat by hook laden "Utopian Scream".
Metal Dreamcrash certainly is not, so it's kind of strange seeing this band on Metal Blade Records, but these Finn's certainly have a unique sound that could, in a perfect world, have mass appeal. The descriptions "a post-punk wet dream" and "bat shit lunatics" are not far off, trust me.
