Perversor: Anticosmocrator

The track "Awakening of the Ancient Ones" begins with the sounds of what are either bees or flies swarming around something. It doesn't last long, just a couple of seconds, but it nevertheless brings to mind an image of thousands of insects gathering together. The rest of the track alludes to the Lovecraftian lore of creatures long since asleep or dormant preparing to wreak havoc on the people of the earth. One of the key elements of Lovecraft's ancient ones is that they have been around for millennia before human beings were even a possibility. They are ancient, alien, and quite possibly insane. The song does the stories justice in that it not only buzzes with the strange sound of insects, it also stirs things into a frenzy of mystery, fear, and awe.

Given that we haven't heard much from Perversor in seven years, perhaps the band, too, has taken on the status of the dormant ancient ones. But fear not, the band has risen and gathered its forces and is ready for a full-scale onslaught. For the most part, things sound pretty good. This is raw, old school, black / death metal played with strong amounts of thrash and even heavier doses of madness and insanity. I enjoyed the album, though I found the songs to be larger crafted on the same kinds of ideas over the over again. I was also not quite as fond of the relentless drum sound on this album. I love crazy drumming, but there are times when the blast beats sound like a wind-up toy that's run into a wall and can only turn and turn and turn.
