Alfahanne: Alfapokalypse

One of the funniest parts of Pitch Perfect comes when some of the characters start adding the prefix "aca" to far too many words, things like "Aca-excuse me?" The terms are meant to convey an insane commitment to a capella music. This album takes the prefix "Alfa" and adds it to not only its title but also sort of does it on the seventh track. There's obviously no real connection to Pitch Perfect here, just a funny little coincidence. Alfahanne does have a sense of humor and if fans want to gear up for an Alfapokalypse, so be it.

This album actually came out last year, but has not been available as a digital download in the United States until recently. The album was well received and the band, encouraged, has already finished work on their second album. It may even be available, but I think the band is hoping that American audiences will discover them through this release first. The songs on this album are supposed to highlight, here a little and there a little, the band's commitment to mixing black metal, classic rock, punk, and gothic. Other writers have compared the band to a weird blend of Danzig, the Misfits, and Supersuckers. It's also worth noting that the album also features guest appearances from Niklas Kvarforth from Shining and Hoerst from Taake. I admired the band's overall energy and could easily identify something akin to a punk rock feel to the whole thing. Nevertheless, I found the whole thing to be mostly variations on a theme, one that I wasn't as drawn to as I might have been. My advice is to check out a few tracks and see what you think. "Alla Ska Mé" was my favorite of the bunch.
