Sanzu: Painless
By this time of the year, I'm catching up to multiple new releases that I somehow missed right when they were released. Take, for example, this EP by Sanzu, a new death metal band from Perth, Australia. The band members released this independently back in June and are planning on releasing a full-length sometime soon, possibly by the end of the year. The band sees itself as working in the tradition of bands like Morbid Angel combined with elements of Gojira. Such comparisons don't always work, but I think that fans of those bands will find Sanzu to be not too far off the mark. The music is consistently heavy, but it's a heaviness best described as crushing or oppressive. From start to finish, things sound as though they are weighted down by all the aggression and power the band can muster. I was impressed not only with the overall sound, but with the band's ability to sustain their heavy attack throughout each track. Check out "Variant Red" and "Lunar Crush" to see what this band does well. I'll be interested to see what direction this band takes things in future releases.
