At first I couldn't say that I was familiar with the name Koen Herfst, though it turns out that I have actually heard his drumming on the debut album of metal group ReVamp. Anyway apparently Koehn is an experienced musician that has made quite a name for himself, and after hearing his performances on this release he's clearly not your average performer. Koen is a diverse artist whom plays rock, metal, pop, hip hop and dance having been associated with a range of artists which is reflected on his first solo album Back To Balance. It has been quite the productive year for Koen as besides Back To Balance he has also recorded new albums with the death metal band I CHAOS and thrash metal group Dew-Scented.
Koehn's drumming takes a back seat as required while still having ample space to exhibit his technical prowess, and that he does. You don't have to be a drum fan to appreciate what's on Back To Balance as it's catering to a wider audience, while yes there is that technical portion there are also those more straightforward compositions. Back To Balance includes fourteen assorted tracks, and some of those are instrumentals. Vocalist Mats Levén (ex. Therion, Yngwie Malmsteen) is just one on the long list of notable extra performers, with others on vocals, guitar, bass, keyboards and there is also a violinist adding to the variety. Back To Balance is the modern sounding release, displaying Koehn's wide range of influences including progressive rock, metal, fusion, symphonic and electronic music.
I have found myself eagerly returning to this album as Back To Balance is one engaging release by Koen Herfst.
