While it has been a very strong year in progressive rock the same can be said for jazz and one of the more uplifting efforts has to be Home Suite Home from musician/arranger/composer Patrick Williams, a name synonymous with the swinging big band style. His vast output includes scores for more than sixty-five feature films, one hundred television shows and twenty-five television series and includes four Emmy awards and Two Grammy's. Not a bad body of work to say the least.
On his new release there are no less than eighteen musicians making for a true big band experience. The album swings right from the start with the nostalgic "52nd & Broadway". Patti Austin provides the jazzed up vocals even venturing into scat at times. The three part "Home Suite Home" was inspired by William's children going from jaunty swing to sweet balladry whereas part III returns with an excellent groove and fine solo spots from Tom Scott (tenor saxophone) and Michael Stever (trumpet).
Another fine ballad takes shape in the form of "A Hefti Dose Of Basie", featuring the subtle touch of Peter Erskine on drums and Chuck Berghofer on bass and a beautiful trumpet solo from Stever.
One of the best cuts is the lively "I've Been Around" featuring stellar vocal performances from Frank Sinatra Jr. and Tierney Sutton. Frank Sinatra Jr. is certainly a chip off the old block.
Fantastic horn solos and swinging melodies abound as big band music does not get much better than Home Suite Home taking the listener on a round trip through the glory days of jazz. I highly recommend you take the ride.
