Seas, The: Give Up The Ghost

The Seas is an interesting rock band hailing from Southeastern Kentucky. In the band are Richard Sester (drums, samples), Michael Sliter (vocals), Jeremy Williams (bass) and Logan Powell (guitar).

They formed in 2009 and released their debut A Separation in 2011. 2015 brings their sophomore effort Give Up The Ghost and I will say this right off the bat, I love their sound. The music has elements of rock and metal loaded with atmosphere and edginess with Powell's guitar leading the way. The music is very moody with different textural layers as the band lays down some very cool guitar parts and utilizes effects and samples in a big way. Often the effects give a spacey vibe and the songs vary in tone sometimes transitioning between heavy and softer segments. There are certainly progressive moments scattered throughout.

The first track "Battlecry" starts with mellow guitar work before the heavy riffs entry abruptly intensifying the sound. The music takes on edgy and mood laden heavy rock with more atmospheric parts to keep things interesting. The vocals are excellent here and throughout the disc. "Across the Earth" starts heavy immediately with a nifty riff progression and plenty of musical depth. This is one of the more memorable tunes and the bass and drum groove is as tasty as it gets. The tension increases as the song develops eventually leading to a more angry approach, especially in the lead vocals. "Broken Bones" is a short, trippy affair with atmospheric guitar taking on low and higher tones and the effects form a blanket of unsettled eeriness over the listener's ears. "The Hunter" employs a Floyd-like tasty guitar groove before the riffs burn with heaviness and the guitar effects are suitably trippy. "Premonition" has a more electronic sound and the guitar chords are slightly somber in tone and the vocals quite moody. Another excellent song to be sure.

The only cover is a metal version of The Knack classic "Sharona" where lighter moody soundscapes are washed with metallic riffs and soaring vocals. The band really puts their own stamp on this one.

Give Up The Ghost is a terrific slice of moody atmospheric heavy rock with a textural depth that will seep into your musical sweet spot, slowly revealing itself one delicious note at a time.
