Aggressive Hippies is the fifth release for the jazz-fusion collective known as Marbin, originally the duo of guitarist Dani Rabin and sax player Danny Markovitch but now also including drummer Greg Essig and bassist John W. Lauter. Featuring 9 new instrumental compositions, Aggressive Hippies will be self-released by the band but marketed & distributed by long time associates MoonJune Records.
If you've heard any of the past Marbin material, you are probably already aware of their fiery, feisty, and at times ferocious style, which incorporates Rabin's virtuoso guitar skills, Markovitch's melodic saxophone, and intricate rhythms, incorporating jazz, rock, world music, prog, and a little jam band for good measure. There are some absolutely blistering cuts here, like the complex ripper "African Shabtay", the guitar shred of "Y'all are Good", the soaring funk of "Juke Joint", and the Mahavishnu Orchestra on steroids track "O'l Neckin' ", which features some vicious guitar licks, screaming sax, and gymnastic drumming. The title track is a catchy little funk/jazz ditty with a scary sax hook and jangly guitars, and the band launch into a perfect representation of their live sound (check out their live album The Third Set from 2014...unbelievably good) with the lengthy closer "Jambo".
Those fusion fans looking to find that 'hot new band' who pay homage to the greats of the '70s but adorn their sound with a modern touch absolutely need to discover Marbin, who now have actually been around the scene since 2009. These guy tear it up and deserve to be heard by the masses. Don't miss this one!
