The legend of Steve Hackett has continued to grow, now 38 years after leaving seminal progressive rock act Genesis. With an illustrious solo career, as well as collaborations with Steve Howe in GTR and Chris Squire in Squackett, Steve has managed to keep a very busy recording and touring career for decades, accumulating many outstanding albums in the process. The Man, The Music is a 2 1/2 hour long documentary that takes a look at the long career of this influential musician, from this early days in Genesis all the way through his latest solo album Wolflight. Featuring many in-depth interviews with the man himself, Steve discusses his time with Genesis, his seminal solo albums from the late '70s, the recent Genesis Revisited concerts and recordings, as well as his brand new album. Also joining in on the fun for discussions are longtime band member & keyboard player Roger King, Steven Wilson, and the late Yes bassist Chris Squire, among others. Genesis fans will probably be disappointed in that there is no vintage concert footage of the band included here, but there are some recent live clips of Hackett's current ensemble which provide plenty of enjoyment. Probably the most thrilling part of this documentary, other than hearing so many anecdotes from Steve himself (including his painful recollections of his first divorce which spiraled him into deep depression), is seeing him give guitar demonstrations on both electric & classical guitar. Here he shows up close some of the techniques he's used and developed over the years, and for a guitar fan this is must see material.
The Man, The Music is as good as it gets if you want to see & hear first hand everything about the career of one of the true treasures of progressive rock.
