My Silent Wake: Damnatio Memoriae

My Silent Wake has always been willing to experiment with different styles of music—doom, ambient, acoustic, and so on—but with this album, the band takes listeners into the doom / death metal style that they arguably do best. That's not to say things are so steeped in doom that there's no room for variety. No, Ian Arkley's music weaves elements of doom with highly melodic, even yearning, guitar solos that break through the funk of the rhythm section while also reinforcing an overall sense of sadness. Check out "And So it Comes to an End" for a good example of the way the guitars do most of the emotional work of the band's sound. Playing with Arkley are Addam Westlake on Bass and Gareth Arlett on Drums. Martin Bowes (Attrition) also contributed some synth work here and there on this release. Overall, this is a solid new release that creates a good sense of atmosphere and mood. Though some of the songs draw things out too much, the album as a whole is a welcome offering within the doom metal genre.
