Fought Upon Earth: Fought Upon Earth
Where to start with Fought Upon Earth?? Basically this is two guys (yeah, I know, isn't every new band these days?) with a little help here and there. Style wise they're all over the place, some blackened death, a pile of NWOBHM sensibilities, a smattering of doom and keyboards to the fore. Do these guys have a clue what they're about?
Somehow what should be a conglomeration of disparate ideas and noises meshes together to make an album that grows in stature the longer you spend with it. For such a brutal musical base, the use of keys so high in the mix is unusual, but it's also crucial as to why this instrumental fare works so well. Mark Lamb (Acid King) who provides them also brings guitars, 'occasional' percussion and grunts (although the latter are hard to spot), leaving Lance Lea (surely that's a superhero's undercover name… of Scorched Earth Policy) to bring the drum thunder. Terry Goss does add a few excellent guitar solos across the album, but in the main this grandiose, full on assault is from Lamb. In itself that's impressive, but it's the scope and breadth of what he brings together on this self titled effort that really takes you aback. As does the cohesive way a selection of tracks, which on there own often seem to have little common bond, somehow mesh together to create a satisfying romp through what's maybe best described as progressive doom.
Don't be put off by a ho-hum band logo, or budget cardboard sleeve, for the true value from Fought Upon Earth comes from the most important place, the music. "Senseless" being an anthemic chest beater, "The Teralonyx" a mesmerising mix of cultural references, "Wrong Wing" an excellent melodic, distortionless break from the tumult, while "Mutiny In Progress" powers home through an intense guitar attack.
Early days for Fought Upon Earth, but their battle is worth winning!

Fought Upon Earth: Fought Upon Earth Posted by Jon Neudorf, SoT Staff Writer on 2016-01-04 17:04:04 My Score:
Fought Upon Earth is a metallic duo hailing from the San Francisco Bay area. The players are Mark Lamb (guitars, keys, percussion, grunts) and Lance Lea (drums). Special guest Terry Goss adds guitar solos on three tracks.
The musicians have been involved in other projects including Acid King, Scorched-Earth Policy and Secrets of the Sky. Fought Upon Earth is their latest project and their self-titled debut is the subject of this review.
This is a heavy album in the vein of early Sabbath and Led Zeppelin in places but there is also a Stoner sound to go along with their classic Doom metal stylings.
The first tune "Rice Riot" is all creepy effects and mood laden atmospheres and acts as a short intro to "Buy God" with its big guitar riffs and atmospheric keyboards. The riffs are doomy and heavy and the brief vocal spot adds some muted growls that further adds to the darker atmosphere. "Senseless" offers more dramatic riffage in the vein of classic '70s metal with heavy lead guitar. On the Stoner/Doom metal of "Copping Mechanism" the soundscape is moody and atmospheric while still retaining a very heavy sound whereas "Wrong Wing" is a mellower tune reminding me of some of Led Zeppelin's softer moments ala "Going To California". On a similar note, "Primitive Energies" marries pretty acoustics with melodic electric guitar while the intense "Mutiny In Progress" is a thundering barrage of heaviness.
Fought Upon Earth is a solid metal album mixing old school sounds with more modern stoner rock soundscapes. Although it's length is short the quality in the music speaks for itself.
