Infernal Torment: Birthrate Zero

Guitar players can come up with some very rifftagious (that's riff and contagious. Ok, I know it's dorky) ideas. By the sound of this album, Infernal Torment has two very good guitar players. Unfortunately, for this band, songwriting skill and guitar skill are mutually exclusive.

The first few songs are the most blatantly catchy. All the cuts display some excellent soloing, interesting time changes, and some parts that sound really good. The solos fit the rhythms and are well thought-out. The album has lots of good moments...but still has plenty of bad ones.

For instance, the title track's "Angel of Death" rip-off is too much for me to take seriously on its own. They did know that they would owe Slayer money for this song, right?

"F**k The Whales" caught my ear the most because it uses its main riff just enough. It is easily the best song on the album. And the cover of Maiden's "Seventh Son of a Seventh Son" is well done. It follows the original closely with a few interesting twists.

Ultimately, the monotone "death" vocals kill this album. There are parts where the growling would fit, but Scott Jensen sings this way either because he can't sing otherwise or he just doesn't have the sense not to.
