Shadow Realms is the debut from Swedish technical death metal act Firedawn, who are comprised of vocalist LG Petrov (Entombed A.D., Morbid, Nihilist), guitarists Victor Brandt (Entombed A.D.) and Fredrik Folkare (Unleashed, Necrophobic), bassist A. Impaler (Unleashed, Necrophobic), and drummer Matte Modin (Raised Fist, Defleshed). As you can see, somewhat of an extreme metal supergroup, as these guys carry plenty of pedigree that pretty much guarantees that Shadow Realms will be a more than solid affair. And, that is indeed the case, as tracks like "Imperial Burning", "Lucifer Has Spoken", "Spirit of the Black Tide", and the brutal complexity of "Necromance" bring the best that death metal has to offer. While influences of Grave, Morbid Angel, Behemoth, Gorguts, Vader, and Dissection appear from time to time, the band have done a great job of bringing all the flavors of their main acts into play for a tasty melting pot of extreme metal sounds. LG Petrov delivers a masterful performance on the vocals, his growling bellow perfectly decipherable sitting atop crushing riffs and machine-like blasting on such excellent fare as "Ginninga", "The Emperor" and the title track.
Not only a very solid death metal release here in 2015, but also a very impressive debut, Shadow Realms is one platter of extreme metal that you would be well advised to investigate.
