I'm sure it will come as no surprise that this latest release from the fine folks at Transubstans Records is another hard rock/metal band from Sweden, by a power trio calling themselves Serpent. Nekromant contains 9 tracks of doomy, bluesy stoner hard rock & metal, crafted by Adam Lundqvist (Guitars), Mattias Ottosson (Bass/Vocals), and Joakim Olsson (Drums). Influenced Black Sabbath, Pentagram, The Sword, and Sleep, with other nods to Blue Cheer, Cactus, Sir Lord Baltimore, Mountain, and Saint Vitus, Serpent have a huge, beefy sound thanks to some ferocious riffs, effects laden vocals, and crushing grooves. "Feverdream" is just a massive track, and others, like "Hounds of Hell", "Demon on Our Side", and "Hey You" just mash the listener with bruising, monstrous fuzz soaked riffs that bring to mind all those great bands of the '70s. When the band get all bluesy, as they do on the wonderful "Leaving the World", sinewy lead guitar solos mix with thick riffs and nimble bass fills for an emotional, hard rocking good time. Of course, it's the doom laden crushers that are really going to resonate with listeners, and "This is My Time", "Doom on You", and "Master of Ceremony" more than fit the bill.
I've mentioned this on more than a few occasions over the years, but if you love '70s styled hard rock, metal, and prog, and you haven't yet checked out some of the artists on the Transubstans roster, you really need to as soon as possible. Serpent are another Swedish act putting out some terrific '70s inspired heavy rock music that any fan of the genre will love.
