Polish multi-instrumentalist Grzegorz Morawski has been performing in the Polish music scene since 2002. I believe When Death Comes is his first solo album. On the disc Grzegorz plays all instruments himself and he does a mighty fine job as the album sounds fresh and vital and contains many nice melodies. I would categorize this as a mixture of gothic and progressive metal with some alternative elements reminding me of British New Wave of the '80 and early '90s.
His guitar playing is quite good throughout the disc and a prime example is the opening track "Letter". Cleanly picked notes and atmospheric keyboards lead into crunchier riffs and talking voice samples. The atmosphere is very moody and guest vocalist Anna Sipko adds a nice touch. Besides being a good guitarist he also has a decent voice which is an integral part of the album. On "Beauty" the guitar riffs are more bluesy and real catchy and his lead vocals have a tinge of David Bowie, not so much in sound but more in his stylistic approach. "Hollow Hand" has some cool electronic elements along with echoed guitar chords. The keyboards and guitar is quite moody giving the track a dark wave feel. The keyboards and string arrangements throughout the disc give the music a darker tone which shouldn't come as a surprise given the subject matter. On "War" the sound is heavier and the riffs more dramatic delving into numerous changes in tempo and moments of melodic shredding. Grzegorz mixes in growls with his clean vocals and the results are very good. The title track is another solid slice of moody metal highlighted with atmospheric keyboards and multiple guitar lines.
Considering this is the work of just one musician the results are impressive. The music has depth, melody and mood and should provide plenty of substance for those seeking a more atmospheric listening experience.
