Chaos Frame: Path To Exile

Chaos Frame is quite an appropriate name for this metal band that started out in 2010 well the "Chaos" part anyway, as at times their songs can sound somewhat busy yet it all gels together with enough significant hooks. The amount that is going on at times produces quite explosive results, and Chaos Frame successfully unites this with appealing melodic vocals. Described as "US power, thrash and progressive metal" Chaos Frame are a powerful sounding group that put a lot into their songs and they don't shy away from complexity. I can't really draw a direct comparison to another group as they cerrtainly have their own thing going on.

In 2011 Chaos Frame released Another Life and they have followed that with Path To Exile. Path To Exile is quite the twisiting album that keeps you guessing, not surprising though as this heavy group sure has a assorted list of influences including extreme metal. As demonstrated by their drummer who likes to kick it into high gear blasting away and also those deathly vocals on "Derceto". The melodic "Painful Lessons" is one of Path To Exile's more straightforward tracks and also a restrained one when compared to the title track which follows. As Chaos Frame turn up their technical input somewhat on "Paths To Exile" and it's something which the Minnesota based group are very competent at, the proof is on Path To Exile.

Chaos Frame: Path To Exile

My Score:

"Progressive metal with balls"...that's the way this Minnesota band describe themselves, and it's pretty spot on. Paths to Exile is the latest Nightmare Records release for Chaos Frame, who combine soaring melodies with a mix of thunderous prog-metal & thrash for a style that really packs a punch yet retains its accessible edge. Crunchy riffs and blazing lead guitar solos permeate the heavy "Painful Lessons", all while lead vocalist Dave Brown lends his superior vocal talents and shoots things into the stratosphere, while the band burst through with some blast beats and manic riffing on the raging title track, easily one of the most aggressive songs here but one that also contains some excellent vocal layers. "Derceto" has a more symphonic flavor to it in spots, but the band also dial up some extreme sounds thanks to a few growls and massive riffs. Showing that they can also dig into some crazy complex arrangements, tunes such as "Terra Firma" and "Paper Sun" offer up tumultuous rhythms and blistering, intricate guitar riffs, proving Chaos Frame's intention of delivering potent, thrashy progressive metal.

Path to Exile is a damn fine album, chock full of some of the most lethal prog-metal I've heard in a while, but still quite catchy in spots. If you haven't yet spotted Chaos Frame on your radar screen, go and seek them out.
