Quorum: Another World

The formation of Russian progressive rock band Quorum dates back to 2003 when Sergey Nikonorov (drums), Dmitry Shtatnov (bass) and Pavel Barabanov (guitars) decided to get together. They released their debut in 2006 followed by Klubkin's Voyage in 2010. Their new release Another World contains songs that were written years earlier and progressive music fans should be thankful they have given life to these seven tracks. In particular, fans of early Genesis and classic prog in general will want to hear this disc.

The album is off to an excellent start with "Snow" and its gently picked acoustic guitar and swirling piano melody. The riffs get heavier and the synths spacier as the song progresses before returning to acoustic guitar at song's end. Dreamier textures permeate the title track as the rhythms and riffs are a little softer invoking the occasional Floydian element. Again, as the song builds steam the riffs become thicker with fantastic interplay between guitar and keyboards. The catchy "Behold" is a little less complex but no less enjoyable whereas "86" is a keyboardist's dream as layers of synths and keys dominate the soundscape. The heavier and darker "Motion" combines psychedelic guitar trappings and soaring solos with more ethereal soundscapes. Back and forth it goes until ending with one of the best guitar solos on the disc. The CD ends with "Space Wanderer", a terrific slice of symphonic progressive rock.

I should also briefly mention the lead vocals. Dmitry's approach is more understated and rarely does he let loose in that department. Although he doesn't possess an overly strong voice his style suits the music well. All lyrics are in Russian so there will be a language barrier for some.

Quorum are certainly one of the better Russian bands I have heard and I highly recommend Another World to fans of that classic '70s symphonic sound.
