Sherwood, Billy: Collection

I am not going to get into the background of Billy Sherwood, I will save that for another review. If you are at all familiar with the progressive music genre there is no doubt you will have heard his name bandied about. What we have here is a compilation disc titled Collection containing tracks from all his solo albums plus a couple newer tracks that have never been released until now.

The first two tracks "Drone Deciphers" and the ten minute "Seeing Through The Walls" are more subdued in nature with treated lead vocals and catchy guitar and synths. On "Call" Sherwood picks up the tempo with nice rhythmic dynamics and a decided Talk-era Yes feel. "On Impact" has that classic Sherwood vocal with orchestral keyboards and melodic yet biting lead guitar. The violin synths take this one into symphonic prog territory. "Dying Breed" has a catchy pop element and some nice acoustic guitar from Sherwood. He is a talented musician as he plays everything himself on most of these songs (except for drums played by Jay Schellen on one track). "The Recurring Dream" is another earworm, a real atmospheric and 'dreamy' number with laid back instrumentation.

The two bonus tracks, a nice version of Sting's "I Hung My Head" and "Dark To Light", another catchy tune with melodic guitar work and Sherwood's fat bass lines are certainly worth a listen.

Since there are only nine tracks this can only be a small sampling of his body of work so there is a lot of music that you will miss if you only stick to this release. This is, however, a decent overview of his career thus far. For a more in depth analysis I urge you to buy the albums from which these tracks were culled as there is a lot more of Sherwood's music to explore.
