Myrath: Legacy

Myrath made such a strong impression with their first three albums Hope, Desert Call and Tales Of The Sand. So I couldn't possibly pass up the opportunity to taste their wonderful blend of what has been labeled as "Oriental Metal" once again. Few band's songs move me in the way that Myrath's do, and listening to their new album Legacy is another memorable and uplifting experience. It's little wonder that I'm so drawn to the music of this band, being a massive fan of progressive metal with Symphony X and the like and I also really enjoy middle eastern music so when you mix the two styles it's like the perfect match. Whilst others have combined metal and that middle eastern sound so successfully in the past such as guitarist Marty Friedman and of course the groups like Orphaned Land, Myrath's range of influences has certainly resulted in quite the distinctive style that sets them apart. The success of Myrath's prior albums has seen the band go on to perform live with the likes of Dream Theater, Orphaned Land, Pagans Mind and Tarja, and they are soon to embark on a European tour with Symphony X which is sure to get the fans excited.

Myrath unleash their musical hooks early as Legacy gets underway with a sweeping Arabic instrumental number titled "Jasmin", this spirited track sets the mood so effectively. Myrath's metal then joins in for the instantly catchy "Believer" one of the more straightforward tracks on Legacy. Myrath's vibrant progressive metal then comes into play on "Get Your Freedom Back" this is such a top track, one thing about Myrath is that you find those unexpected additions like the section where the bass and drums go solo and groove it up on this one, and then there's those alluring ethnic vocals on "Nobody Lives". Myrath goes cinematic at start of "The Needle" a varied track which isn't short on heavy riffs and nimble drumming and features a sweet melodic chorus. There's more of that on tracks like "The Unburnt" where the Arabic metal is flowing freely and the instrumental section works a treat. The band really cover all the bases once again there are so many stirring elements to their songs be it from the keyboards, guitars, drums and percussion, bass, or vocals this album is such a great all round effort and no one is neglected in the mix. The band has changed their ways as over time as the instrumental component has played a lesser role, and while that wonderful musicianship is still present as the band have gone forward the focus has changed and the amount of vocals has increased. Though that really isn't surprising when they have such a talented lead vocalist.

Legacy is an early contender for metal album of the year, so get your per-orders in quick as metal releases this impressive don't come along every day.

Myrath: Legacy

My Score:

I know I've said this before, but when a progressive metal band perfectly combines instrumental virtuosity with expert melodies & catchy hooks, the results are often amazing. Problem is, there are a dwindling few acts who are able to do this on a consistent basis, with Symphony X, Vanden Plas, Circus Maximus, Seventh Wonder, and occasionally Dream Theater being a few who instantly come to mind, but you have to also throw Tunisia's Myrath into that mix as well. With their latest album Legacy, this five piece juggernaut continue on with their engaging brand of 'Oriental Metal', which adds ethnic elements into a stew pot of alluring melodies, symphonic arrangements, multi-layered vocals, and of course crunchy guitar work. Lead vocalist Zaher Zorgatti is just spot on here, soaring to the heavens on unforgettable tunes like "Nobody's Lives", "Get Your Freedom Back", "Believer", and of course "The Needle". Whether it's sweeping symphonic metal or darker, more lethal cuts like "The Unburnt" and "Storm of Lies", there's something for everyone throughout Legacy. Instrumentally, these guys really know what they are doing, as the album is filled with blazing guitar & keyboard solos, rock solid rhythms, and when you add in the stellar vocals, symphonic, and ethnic flavors, you have a complete winner of an album that is sure to be one of the best progressive metal releases of 2016.

My Score:

Album number four from Oriental metal outfit Myrath finds this Tunisian act make the step up in class their approach has long suggested possible. Don't get me wrong, the band's first three albums are remarkably strong efforts from an act coming out of a country hardly known for its metal music. However where these previous efforts relied on a combination of Middle Eastern flavours combined to a Kamelot slice of European power metal, this time everything sounds completely natural and organic. In fact it's genuinely possible to suggest that what Legacy thrives through is purely and simply the Myrath sound.

Integral to that success are the keyboards of Elyes Bouchoucha, the manner in which his atmospheric layers lock in place with the more "ethnic" instrumentation – violins, alto, oud, gasba and ney – the bedrock from which most of this album's delights spring forth. However that the walls of riffage from the guitar of Malek Ben Arbia and bass of Anis Jouini somehow mesh perfectly with the musical ethos from this band's homeland is undoubtedly the crowning glory. And that it makes for utterly captivating power metal that sounds like nothing anyone else is making, while still staying within the confines of the more theatric side of the genre, is where Legacy really comes into its own. Singer Zaher Zorgati is first rate, just the right amount of aggression added to the mix alongside his soaring long held notes and the more Middle Eastern flavours he often employs. He's a revelation and having seen this band support Symphony X on their recently concluded UK tour, I can attest to the fact that he has the same abilities live – impressive indeed. As are the the percussive pulses from drummer Morgan Bethet, his ability to remain busy and to the forefront of everything this album has to say, yet without becoming overbearing or domineering, a real skill.

Dip into Legacy at any point and you'll discover something to delight your senses, whether that be the atmospheric undulation of "The Unburnt", the swooping swirl of short introduction "Jasmine", which quickly segues into the melodic majesty of "Believer". Or indeed, the more traditional power metal attack of "Get Your Freedom Back", where the guitars come straight at you, before easing off the gas long enough to allow the unmistakable Myrath flavours to seep through - Zorgati utterly imperious throughout.

Myrath have seldom put a foot wrong across their first three albums. However with this latest addition to their fast growing Legacy, there's no denying that they've made a mighty statement. Hopefully this album will see the band make the breakthrough their music deserves, for there's little doubt that Myrath have quickly become one of the most consistent and talented bands of recent years. Legacy however take it that one step further and confirms their arrival in the upper echelons of Oriental Metal and indeed, theatric power metal of any variety.
