Normally, when you think of the music of Tennessee, country music tends to come to mind first, certainly not brutal, old school styled death metal, but that's exactly what we have here from Kingsport's very own Manic Scum. Their brand new Unspeakable Axe EP is titled Acidic Remains, and it contains 4 short tracks of pummeling death metal that sounds as if it came straight out of the early '90s scene. That's right, no metalcore, no deathcore, no technical death metal here, just crushing old school sounds steeped in gore soaked imagery. If you love the early material of bands like Death, Obituary, Morbid Angel, Suffocation, Deicide, Cannibal Corpse, and Autopsy, you've come to the right place. "Necromutation" plows ahead at full speed, driven by raging riffs and demonic low growls, while the massive "Human Pulp" slows things down a hair, providing for some monstrous passages of death metal glory. "Strapped to the Gurney" could have been a leftover from the Scream Bloody Gore sessions, and the title cut throws in some serious groove to go alongside the brutal carnage.
It's rough, it's raw, but that's the charm of Acidic Remains, approximately 15-minutes of old school death metal that will instantly take you back in time to an era where this kind of thing was in its infancy. Job well done, and I look forward to more from this outfit in the not too distant future.
