Primal Fear: Rulebreaker

Oh dear, this one's too easy but there's no way I'm not going to stroke it into the back of the net. Rulebreaker? Seriously? Rulebreaker? What is the absolute best thing about the always consistent Primal Fear? Well, since you ask, it is their adherence to the rules of their chosen genre – metal, proper manly metal. Riffs – lots of riffs, Ralf Scheepers' Halfordesque vocals allied to memorable, gigantic choruses are what we have come to expect and what the Fear deliver in spades all over Rulebreaker.

It just happens that as I type I am listening to "Bullets & Tears" which fully exemplifies the above but as ever the quality control one expects from these veteran Germans is present from beginning to end. Bassist Mat Sinner says "We've learned a lot during the Delivering The Black sessions and the following world tour. We've tried to put this know-how and all the positive energy into the songs and production of Rulebreaker." He's not wrong, the band still has a tremendous amount of energy well into their career, the title track being a prime example. If they do step anywhere near breaking the rules then it is obviously in the nearly twelve minutes of "We Walk Without Fear" but the fun is really in pounding tracks such as the dumb but fun "In Metal We Trust" which sounds exactly like what you would think and is all the better for it – just like everything about Primal Fear.
