El Tubo Elastico: El Tubo Elastico
El Tubo Elasitico is a new Spanish instrumental progressive rock band with their self-titled debut now under their belts. After listening to this album it is hard to believe it is their first one as the band sounds as if they have been forging their sound for years.
In the band are Alfonso Romero (bass guitar, synthesizers), Carlos Cabrera (drums, percussion), Daniel González (guitar, synthesizers) and Vizen Rivas (guitar, synthesizers).
The music is well conceived and the guitar work is both imaginative and complex creating different layers within the music. Clean picking and distorted sustained riffs adds lots of atmosphere and psychedelic undertones to the mix. "Pandora" begins with guitar chords fading out followed by synths and a deep drum and bass groove. The rhythm section is also outstanding. The music ebbs and flows through different guitar landscapes and never gets boring. "Camaleón" has a laid back spaced out approach with psychedelic guitar leanings with a cool distorted tone. Some nifty time changes ensures the listener this is definitely progressive music. The opening keyboard line in "Ispra I" gains loudness amidst quirky guitar exploits and as the song develops the guitar layering is indeed impressive. The band incorporates jazzy explorations throughout the disc as well as providing hints of fusion into their psychedelic yet progressive sound.
My favourite track is the psychedelic and groove laden "Rojo" which includes complex drum fills, percolating synths and hypnotizing Floyd-like rhythms.
This is really quite a stunning debut album from a band with a very bright future. I hope to hear more from them in the years to come.
