Is there a more 'Metal' and imposing band name than Amoth? Not sure what gave this band from Helsinki, Finland the inspiration for that choice, but this is one inventive metal group with a new album titled Revenge. Revenge is a quite a mixed album not just style wise but also the strength of the songs as this release is quite up and down in that regard with some interesting ideas that perhaps could have been taken further. There are also some odd inclusions on this album like the percussion on 'Die Young" though Amoth's style isn't the usual that's for sure. Amoth actually classify themselves as a progressive heavy metal band and they clearly have a vast array of influences. It's not all heavy going, "Children Of The Night" is one of the non metal tracks and also one that is rather ordinary, I would take the Dream Evil song by the same name any day over this. Despite Revenge's flaws the band do show potential and as far as the band's performances on Revenge go guitarist Tomi Ihanamaki is the standout. His acoustic work on the instrumental "For The Moon" is an album highlight, other agreeable tunes are the rocking "Road To Ruins" and the lively title track "Revenge". When based on the overall album though this isn't one Amoth that I'll be leaving the light on for.
