Hailing from Vancouver, Canada are the trio called La Chinga, and they are set to release their sophomore album on Small Stone Recordings, titled Free Wheelin'. Citing influences such as Black Sabbath, UFO, ZZ Top, Led Zeppelin, MC5, James Gang, Leafhound, The Stooges, Deep Purple, Humble Pie, Thin Lizzy, Buffalo, and Sir Lord Baltimore, the band, comprised of Carl Spackler (bass/vocals), Ben Yardley (guitar/vocals), and Jason Solyom (drums), surprisingly sound like none of those classic heavy rock bands, instead opting for an upbeat power pop/hard rock/funk hybrid that's a hell of a lot of fun. Plenty of crisp riffs, scorching blues-metal guitar solos, frantic yet funk laden rhythms, and sleazy vocals adorn rocking tracks like "Stoned Grease White Lightnin'", "White Witchy Black Magic", "Gone Gypsy", and the rousing "War Cry". More rootsy, pop styled tracks, such as "Faded Angel" and "Mountain Momma", have a certain Southern Rock flair to them, while the bruising blues rock of "Right On" brings to mind vintage Cactus. The real kicker is the 10-minute closing epic "The Dawn of Man", filled with huge effects laden guitar riffs, sizzling lead guitar, pounding grooves, and gut wrenching vocals.
Lots of variety, accessible while still having a slight retro feel, Free Wheelin' is a strong album by a powerful trio that brings a lot of enjoyable attributes to the table. Check 'em out!
