Matchbox: Going Down Town

According to the press release the English band Matchbox had some success way back in 1979 with a couple of singles and continued into the early '80s with the single "One More Saturday Night". Going Down Town was originally released in 1985 and a year later the band called it a day but do get together for the occasional one-off concert.

In the band are Graham Fenton (lead vocals), Dick Callan (electric and acoustic guitar, tenor sax, vocals), Brian Hodgson (bass, acoustic and electric guitar, vocals), Gerry Hogan (steel, electric and acoustic guitar, vocals) and Jimmy Redhead (drums, percussion, vocals).

For those interested in good old fashioned rock and roll you need look no further than Going Down Town. "Get Up And Get Out" starts the disc with a rockabilly feel good vibe, very tuneful with melodic blasts of saxophone and clean guitar notes. There is an innocence to this music that is hard to deny. The catchy title track features excellent guitar with a tinge of country while "Stealing Hearts" is another old style '50s rocker featuring the harmonica of Julian Dawson. "She's Hot" is another infectious rockabilly number showcasing '50s style guitar and sublime vocal harmonies. The entire album is loaded with feel good grooves and catchy melodies. The catchy pop ballad "Can't Get Over You" is a prime example. Tasty guitar and bubbly keyboards will ease their way into your brain and just might stay awhile if you let them. The sax stylings in "Roller Skating Sally" is another earworm.

If you enjoy old school rock and roll and don't mind the clock being turned back, oh about sixty years or so, Going Down Town will be a very enjoyable nostalgic ride that is just plain fun to listen to. Recommended for fans of Eddie Cochran, Buddy Holly and '50s rock music in general.
