Destroyer 666: Wildfire

Any new album from Destroyer 666 is reason enough to celebrate, but it's time the metal masses fully embrace this underground act with the release of Wildfire. This little 'UK by the way of Australia' band play a thoroughly devastating brand of blackened thrash that brutalizes at every step, absolutely demolishing the listener with a non stop assault of pulverizing riffs, shredding solos, rampaging grooves, gravely vocals, and irresistible choruses. Part old school metal, part good ol' heavy rock 'n' roll, and part savage extreme metal, Destroyer 666 take no prisoners here on Wildfire, an impossibly catchy yet brutal album that kicks your ass and takes you hostage from the very first listen.

I dare you to find a more potent opener than "Traitor", an absolutely hellacious track that bludgeons with some serious guitar thunder straight out of the early Bay Area thrash scene while also rife with the ominous intensity of the initial black metal scene. "Live and Burn" also crushes from the get go, and is damn catchy to boot, while the raging instrumental "Artiglio Del Diavolo" gallops with NWOBHM majesty (think those first two Iron Maiden albums, as well as Satan), eventually giving way to the grandiose "Hounds at Ya Back", featuring some of the mightiest guitar riffs on the album. Piledriving blast beats propel the violent "Hymn to Dionysus", a tune that also contains fierce growls and loads of tasty, melodic guitar solos, while the speedy title track plays like a head on collision between early Iron Maiden and Motorhead. Another song that will take any metal fan back to 1984 is "White Line Fever" , as it blends classic thrash, NWOBHM, and those early death & black metal sounds so prevalent during that time period. If there are any doubters of the guitar prowess of KK & Vox Ro, just listen to the crushing sounds of "Tamam Shud", an epic, boisterous finale on a truly remarkable album.

Season of Mist has the potential breakout album of the year on their hands with Wildfire, a release that shows Destroyer 666 at the height of their powers. Modern, yet very much old school at the same time, it's heavy metal through and through. Highly recommended!
