Reform Club, The: Never Yesterday
Politics and music sometimes go hand in hand, especially with regards to Norman Baker, a former member of British parliament and also the lead singer of the retro pop/rock band The Reform Club.
The band formed in the '80s as a cover band but didn't release their debut Always Tomorrow until 2013. Their new album Never Yesterday was released in January of 2016. The music on offer is quintessentially English style pop and rock with a heavy retro vibe. When I listened to these tracks they certainly did invoke a '60s feel, sometimes reminding me of The Kinks as in the catchy "Daffodil Cottage" or the rocking "Teapot Lane" with its lovely backing vocals and punchy riffs. "Point Me To The Truth" even unleashes a bit of '60s psychedelia when the heavier guitar work gets rolling.
For more acoustically inspired moments try the jaunty title track, the more introspective "Walking Down The Line" or The Beatle's inspired "That Girl". Whichever song you listen to you can be rest assured of some clever pop music that is as catchy as anything you are likely to hear this year. If you enjoy a little slice of the '60s every now and then you really can't go wrong with Never Yesterday.
Released on Angel Air Records.
