Gloria Morti: Kuebiko

The album title, Kuebiko, refers to a state of exhaustion brought on by senseless violence that is so profound that all one can do is stand at watch. Although this word is new to me, it sounds a bit like a negative form of sublimity, a stunned reaction at stimuli that is so negative and so damaging that the brain cannot prompt the body to movement. This isn't a hopeless state, but it is one where one realizes that there are very few active choices to be made.

This new album, like others by Gloria Morti, includes ferocious blast beats, soul-crushing vocals, and frenetic guitars. Dark and crushing, the music pushes against listeners, daring them to encounter the atrocities and disturbing details brought out through the lyrics. But this isn't an exercise in how much a listener can take; instead, it's an attempt to reconsider the role of the individual in a world so evil and so intense that there hardly seems to be anything good. The opening track begins with what sounds like part of Marlon Brando's speech on horror at the end of Apocalypse Now and then it takes listeners on a journey into a variation on the storied heart of darkness. In a way, this album might warrant comparison to something like T. S. Eliot's "The Waste Land," another didactic and repulsive look at humanity and its propensity toward violence.

This is a strong album from a very intense band. Relentless and unapologetic, this is an album that will certainly appeal to fans of extreme metal.
