Grubbs, Todd: As The Worm Turns

Tampa, Florida musician Todd Grubbs is mostly known for his instrumental guitar solo albums and his work in the band 3 Green Windows. Because of his emphasis on instrumental works Grubbs has decided to start making albums with vocals, the first of which is As The Worm Turns.

Vocalists include Zak Steven (Savatage), John Wesley (Porcupine Tree), Todd Plant (Eyewitness, Cryptic Vision) and newcomers Emily Velasco and Melanie Sims.

For those who have heard his previous material fear not, there is still plenty of guitar fireworks in this set beginning with the roaring barn burner "The Man In The Hat". Zak Steven takes the lead here and his soulful voice is a good fit for this fearsome rocker. The beautifully orchestrated "Stay Alive" calms it down with another wonderful performance from Steven although there is still plenty of bite in Grubb's lead guitar. "The Other Side Of Forever" begins with a bluesy guitar lick before turning into a nice alternative pop direction while the edgy "We Are One", featuring lead vocals by John Wesley, is another intense rocker with burning guitar riffs throughout. On "My Name Is Joe" the sound is more southern R&B as is the country flavoured "Johnstown". The moody "Fabric Of The Day" is a more ethereal offering with more piano and keyboards before ending with The Rolling Stones influenced "Escape From You".

For those who like guitar albums that rock look no further than As The Worm Turns. It might not be overly progressive but it's a gem of an album just the same.
