All Empires Fall is the brand new EP on Relapse Records from Brooklyn's very own black metal ensemble, Tombs. It also happens to be the first studio outing for new keyboard player/second vocalist Fade Kainer, who joins Mike Hill (guitar, vocals), Benjamin Brand (bass), Charlie Schmid (drums), and Evan Schaefer (guitar) to make Tombs an even more potent extreme metal machine. His creepy nuances add a different dimension to tracks like "The World is Made of Fire" and the pummeling "Obsidian", the latter a furious black metal assault chock full of relentless riffs, blasting, and venomous screams. "Last Days of Sunlight" is more of an ominous, atmospheric instrumental, save for some haunting chants, while the grinding, mid-paced "Deceiver" takes on a more death metal style, complete with some crushing guitar riffs and heavy bottom end. For the finale, "V" again falls back into the atmospheric black metal camp, Kainer's keyboard embellishments drift in the background over relentless guitar, bass, and drum bombast, with a mix of clean & growled vocals fighting for supremacy. It's easily the best track here, and if a sign of things to come from this new, revamped Tombs line-up, we are in for some greatness in the not too distant future.
