Though it's been five years since we've last heard from the Finnish lords of heathen/pagan metal Moonsorrow, they are back and have picked up right where they left off with their latest Century Media release Jumalten Aika. Containing 5 lengthy tracks of epic, Viking styled bombast, Jumalten Aika impresses on every level, containing more than a fair share of variety and textures that is sure to please any extreme metal fan who likes some added depth to their music. The opening title cut just oozes power, as tumultuous riffing and pummeling drum work cascade over the listener, embellished by some gorgeous keyboard tapestries and tortured vocal wailing. A more folk-metal approach is taken on the galloping "Ruttolehto incl. Päivättömän Päivän Kansa", while the shortest track here (at 7-minutes!), "Suden Tunti", crushes with Viking metal might, with a fun little folk styled jig thrown into the middle section. Soaring keyboards and gentle acoustic guitar strums accentuate the 'raise your stein of ale to the heavens' sing along folk metal stylings of "Mimisbrunn', and the snarling yet symphonic rampage of "Ihmisen Aika (Kumarrus Pimeyteen)" carries on for 16-minutes of pagan/heathen/folk-metal majesty...or, whatever you want to call it, but just make sure you call it 'exceptional'.
Despite only containing five tracks, Jumalten Aika has a wealth of material to take in, and it's glorious every step of the way. If you didn't think extreme metal could also me majestic and beautiful at the same time, give this one a listen. Forget the fact that Moonsorrow sing in their native tongue, as it won't matter one bit once you start to feel the magnificent power this album contains. Recommended!
