Sudden Death: Monolith of Sorrow
Sudden Death mastered the sound and style of brutal old-school metal long ago and this album puts them at the top of their game. It's surprising that this is only the band's third full-length release. Unfortunately, Sudden Death has experienced many of the usual ups and downs of the music industry, including the stress of multiple line-up changes. Nevertheless, the band quickly rose to prominence in the Italian death metal scene, mostly on the strength of the first two albums, not to mention the band's relentless commitment to keeping the sound of old-school death metal alive. Sudden Death takes up the crushing metal sound pioneered by bands like Death, Carcass, Cannibal Corpse, and others and make it their own—and all without ever sounding like a mere throwback. This album delivers nine intense and heavy tracks that show off powerful riffs, crushing vocals, and the occasional twin-guitar harmony. It's worth a listen. It's also fun listening to the clips from classic films like Nightmare on Elm Street, Re-Animator, and the 1980s Batman at the beginning of each track. Sit back, turn it up, and enjoy. Highly recommended.
