Mother Feather: Mother Feather

Sometimes the hyperbolic gibberish which accompanies virtually all releases these days makes one want to facepalm until the very end of time. Apparently Mother Feather, "marry the scratchy yet catchy, swaggering and dangerous sounds of The Stooges, New York Dolls and The MC5 with the playfulness, pop sensibilities and exuberance of the finest 90s alt-rock, a little upbeat 50s rock n' roll thrown in for good measure." Let's not beat around the bush, this album is about as dangerous as a new born foal. Pop sensibilities – yes! "Beach House" is very pleasant indeed and summery but not at all dangerous.

One thing that the press release does get right is that "Egyptology" does indeed sound like Weezer in places which may make your make your mind up as whether or not to purchase. I'm not sure that much of the rest of the album is as good as these two tracks, some such as "Living, Breathing" don't sound fully formed despite some excellent bass work from Matt Basile who actually excels throughout. I'm slightly surprised that this album comes to market via Metal Blade Records given the distinct lack of metal but full marks to the label for expanding their horizons.
