Putrisect / Scorched: Final State of Existence (Split)
This split should raise the profiles of two old-school death metal bands that have so far only released something on cassette, whether a demo, an EP, or both. Both bands are from the American Northeast: Putrisect is from Baltimore, MD; Scorched hails from Delaware. Each band gets three tracks even though Putrisect has additional noise tracks, an "Intro" and "Outro" to their overall offerings. To my mind, Scorched only really has two tracks since "Impending Demise" is also a short, introductory, work comprised only of sound effects. Once the respective bands get past their introductions, things move along nicely. Both bands perform classic old-school death metal but neither of them sounds like mere throwbacks or uncreative hacks. The nice thing about this split is that neither band outshines the other. Putrisect offers killer tracks, especially the strong "Final Cleansing" and "Astral Martyrdom." I especially liked the latter. Scorched is just as impressive, especially in "Visceral Ascension." This split is worth a listen!
