Now 12 albums into their career, German band Suidakra have crafted another platter of Celtic metal with their latest release Realms of Odoric. Normally the group deliver semi-concept pieces based on historical themes, but on Realms of Odoric they have hooked up with artist artist Kris Verwimp to create a fantasy world, complete with various characters and stories. Musically it's trademark Suidakra, a collision course between death metal, Celtic folk, classic heavy metal, and symphonic rock, much of it bombastic and quite epic, but it's the more atmospheric, almost folk based numbers here that really stand out, such as the gorgeous "Cimbric Requiem" and the lush "Braving the End". Vocally, there's a lot on display throughout, with Arkadius Antonik's vast array of clean & growling styles meshing perfectly with female vocals, all of it soaring over thunderous guitar riffs, keyboards, pipes, and other folk instruments. Some of the highlights of the heavier tracks include the raging "One Against the Tide", the twisting "Creeping Blood", and the Nightwish sounding "Undaunted".
Epic in every way, Realms of Odoric is another fine release from the always dependable Suidakra. Fans of symphonic, melodic extreme metal with a serious Celtic vibe will eat this one right up!
