Necrocosm: Damnation Doctrine
Even after all these years, death metal, when well executed, still carries a serious shock value. Hence the debut, Damnation Doctrine, from USA outfit Necrocosm knows that while surprise ain't the name of their game, impressing through a convincing take on the well worn death path sure is.
Zach Senicola puts a hefty black mark through the first box on the checklist, his powerful gutturals an adrenalin shot of serious proportions, while the bass and drum combination of Matt Brocking and Adam Walker, respectively, is a non stop barrage of brutality. The eponymous track, "Necrocosm", is as good an illustration as any of the frenetic no holds barred cavalcade the band fire up, guitar solos and riffage from Brent Overton and Kevin Spivey, sparky, spikey and straight to the point. Although the aggressive assault that brings them into being is anything other than perfunctory.
"Octopian Eclipse" eases off the pace ever so slightly, proving this lot can still make a snarling, spitting mark no matter the velocity of their attack, while "Hypnagogic Gait" throws a seriously sludgy curve ball into the mix, the piercing guitars all the more poignant against the deep dark air of depression. That all this happens at full speed and with no compromise shows Necrocosm are also capable of taking risks and coming out winners.
Damnation Doctrine may not be crammed with outlandish originality, but it certainly possesses enough imposing twists and turns to leave you in no doubt that Necrocosm are a band looking to follow their own ideas. That they are as convincing as those displayed on this debut album, is what makes you sit up and take note.
