Henriette B.: Tales Of Reality
It's good to see new bands trying to inject some life and interest into what at first could well be seen as heavily used ideas. Taking a metalcore framework and adding a progressive, djent injection, Switzerland's Henriette B. announce their sophomore EP with a sound somewhere beyond the aggressive edge of Periphery. Vocally however we're in much more extreme territory, the throaty howls of Ian Girod possibly proving the make or break for some. If you can handle the full force, no apologies in your faceness of what he's all about, then it's game on.
In their more heavy extremes, double kicks hitting like artillery barrages, things do sometimes get a little bogged down, the undercurrent of melody this band's hidden strength. Therefore it's rewarding that the likes of 'The Other Side' and 'The Mistake We Made' certainly know how to balance everything out and introduce a more thoughtful side through breakdowns, time changes and constantly darting guitars – the latter aspect courtesy of Vincent Simonin and Thierry Grundbacher.
The sure footed strides considerably outweigh the slight stumbles on Tales Of Reality, proving that the growth and evolution of Henriette B. is well underway.
