Subliminal Fear: Escape From Leviathan
What do you get when crossbreed Fear Factory, Meshuggah, Mnemic and Solution .45? You get the 3rd record form Italian Melodic Death Metaller's, Subliminal Fear, Escape From Leviathan (Inverse Records). The band also brings in some special guests to kill on this great record, namely Guillaume Bideau (Mnemic, One-Way Mirror), Jon Howard (Threat Signal) and Lawrence Mackrory of Darkane. Blending catchy Modern Melodic Death Metal interwoven with an Industrial soundscape, makes these guys very interesting and the more you play this record, the more layers you discover.
Escape From Leviathan is a 10 track release that features the dual vocal attack that is Subliminal Fear. This record sounds so good that it almost requires headphones to get the full experience, much like the classic early Mnemic records did. Subliminal Fear's use of keyboard textures creates tension and a dramatic Industrial feel that is mixed well with their extreme and muscular modern detuned Metal riffing. A favorite song is the Threat Signal influenced, "Evilution" that just happens to feature Threat Signal's Jon Howard. The riff is a killer staccato, chunkin' riff that just grabs you by the throat and then hammers it home with a Meshuggah-esque, off time double kick pattern that just crushes. Another scorcher is the track, Self-proclaimed Gods". Manic, powerful and unrelenting are the best words to describe this but then the chorus hits and there's a glorious chorus that is catchy as hell. These guys are great at blending that Modern Heavy with the melodic, all without ever diluting their heaviness. Subliminal Fear even tosses in an excellent Heavy version of the Talk Talk tune, "Living In Another World".
Subliminal Fear have quite simply hit a home run with Escape From Leviathan. I've listed to this record about 8 or 9 times and it doesn't get old and tired at all. Their blend of melodic choruses with great soaring clean vocals fused with some gritty gutteral taunts with the detuned crazy guitar riffing and chest thumping staggered double bass drumming is just awesome. I totally dig this release, this is a winner!
