Conclave are a four piece doom band hailing from Massachusetts, and are comprised of Jerry Orne (bass, vocals), Jeremy Kibort (guitar), Terry Savastano (guitar), and Dan Blomquist (drums). Taking an obvious love for all things Black Sabbath, Candlemass, Trouble, and Saint Vitus, Sins of the Elders contains nine tracks of old school doom, drenched in slow, heavy riffs, plenty of atmosphere, and loads of menace. Most of the songs are lengthy, allowing for the pounding riffage to seep in and pack a punch, especially on "Funeral Fyre", "Black Lines", and the punishing "Aethereum". The guitar duo of Kibort & Savastano have done a great job here of coming up with some memorable riffs, but there's also a good amount of sizzling guitar solos and twin harmonies to be found, which adds another powerful element to the bands sound. Less successful are the semi-growling, gruff moans, bellows, and shouts from Orne; he's coming more from a death metal-meets-hardcore place and while his vocals aren't bad by any means, but they sort of clash with the music in spots where a more mid range, clean style might have made more sense, or, a full on death metal growl. Regardless, there's still much to recommend here on Sins of the Elders, a epic sounding doom release from a young band that hopefully have a bright future ahead of them as they continue to grow & mature their sound.
