Sonus Corona: Sonus Corona

If there's one musical wish you could have right now, I know it would be to have a few more bands offering up some progressive metal. After all there are hardly any left operating in this sphere nowadays, are there? OK, that couldn't be further from the truth. The plethora of news acts arriving every year tipping the wink and nodding their heads as their doff their caps to Dream Theater, Vanden Plas or Symphony X, showing no signs of lessening from avalanche proportions. Debut Finnishers, Sonus Corona at least seem to recognise this fact, their self titled debut heavily leaning on the DT aspect, but to be fair, also offering up some other attacks. A little more Black era Metallica rifferama and enigmatic Wilsonisms of the Porcupine variety, as displayed on the decidedly P-Tree with the distortion pedal stuck on 'gritty', of "The Window".

So to stand out from the crowd this lot better be good – and they are. Hardly shattering the earth, or setting their trail ablaze and yet with a good, clean, singer in Timo Mustonen and a neat ability to infuse all they do with melody and character, Sonus Corona do possess the required mind gnaw to bury in deep. With the focus thoroughly on the guitars, SC also have the confidence to step out of the shadow of their more obvious touching points, while still staying reverential. Hell, there's even some flute thrown in!

I'm not sure the racing pulse and ever shifting beat of "Deliverance", or drama filled "Rise Above" will replace your current prog metal faves, but they do make welcome bedfellows; this band able to make their expulsions sound heartfelt and involving in a way that so many in this packed arena fail to achieve. Take into account that this album is the band's debut and in truth the signs are present that Sonus Corona could indeed evolve into something special. They're not there yet and in fairness, this early in their journey, to expect much else would be unfair. As it is, for prog metal fans, Sonus Corona are a band who should be taking up space in your listening queue and leaving you with high hopes of what may be yet to come.
