Jusska: Tsuki

The second in three back to back EPs planned by Belgian duo Jusska, Tsuki comes with a guest percussion slot from Mike Malyan (ex-Monuments), the three locking together quite magnificently on what is a three track dent-prog-metal crossover of some weight.

Bright and sharp in outlook, the riffs still come crashing through in mighty fashion and yet with an eye on the Tesseract sound, but maybe less muscular and bullish, the melodies are equally, if not more towering. Leander Verheyen is the guitar brains behind the project, Iason Passaris backing him up with dreamy, captivating vocals, and thankfully, unlike a lot of bands operating in this sphere, the pair's vibe is surprisingly natural and organic; nothing feeling forced or contrived and neither is the heaviness tacked on for effect. However as "Cascade" and "Geisha" float passed crushingly, there's no denying they do turn heads through the combination of strength and lightness of touch. "Limbo" closes things out, a little more quirky and enigmatic than its EP mates and yet everything remains catchy and memorable in the extreme, the layered, harmony vocals a real high point.

I haven't heard the first of these three planned EPs - last year's l'homme de l'ombre - however internet chatter would seem to suggest it is every bit as intriguing as Tsuki. If the third part proves just as memorable, Jusska may soon become the next big thing on the djent side of life.
