Holy Dragons: Civilizator

Alexander "Demoraivola" Kuligin – lead vocals, Jurgen Thunderson – lead and acoustic guitars, synthesizers, backing vocals, Chris "Thorheim" Caine – lead and acoustic guitars, Ivan Manchenko – bass guitar and Antonio "Deimos" Repablo – drums ARE Holy Dragaons and is their fourteenth (that's a one and a four, Holy Cow, never mind Holy Dragons!) Pitch Black Records describe Civilizator thus, "an overview of the band's stylistic evolution during its 20-year history, showcasing the various dimensions of the band's sound…classic old school heavy metal …shredding guitar parts, the occasional acoustic parts and the powerful guitar riffs make this their best album yet!"

I don't want to rain on anybody's parade but if it has taken fourteen albums to get to Civilizator I am fairly glad to be ignorant of the first thirteen. There's virtually no originality here, the vocals are, for much of the time quite unintelligible and the production isn't exactly pristine clear. That said there are moments which are worth attention such as "Secret Friend" which at just over four minutes is one of the shorter tunes. It is quite punchy and full of whoas to sing along with although like the rest of the album very much in thrall to Iron Maiden. Similarly "Hawker Hurricane" benefits from being shorter than all the exercises in epicness on the rest of the record. Perhaps the lesson is; less is more.
