With their third release Atomic Zod War, Scandinavian space rock act The Black Explosion are taking their heavy hitting & psychedelic sounds to Metalville Records for a wild collision of of Hawkwind, The Doors, Black Sabbath, MC5, and The Stooges. The trio, comprised of Chris Winter (guitar and vocals), Addman Lindqvist (drums), and Simon Haraldsson (bass), have put together a raucous and spacey set of seven songs, at times high on energy but always striving to either create a mood or journey into the far reaches of the stratosphere. Kick off track "Paralyzed" is 13-minutes of trippy effects, heavy riffs, energetic rhythms, feedback, and agonizing vocals, while "Ain't Coming Home" combines the early punk sounds of the MC5 & The Stooges with the primal garage rock of Grand Funk Railroad, complete with some kick ass guitar & bass riffing. "Location 9" is straight out of the early '70s Hawkwind playbook, filled with fat bass riffs, bubbling sound effects, vocal wailing, and freakout guitar explorations. However, the band doesn't rest on their space rock laurels here, as evident by the bluesy stoner grooves of "Going Down" and "Devil Inside", the latter a kick ass slice of retro rock with some sensational Mark Farner styled fuzz guitar noise that wouldn't have sounded out of place on one of Grand Funk's first few albums.
To be honest, The Black Explosion are most successful when they kick it into high gear on some groove laden '70s influenced hard rock/proto-punk/metal, though the space rock thing ain't half bad either. Atomic Zod War is a lot of fun, so make sure you don't miss out on this hot little slab of psychedelia...and make sure to dig out your lava lamp while you are enjoying it.
