Whispered: Metsutan—Songs of the Void

I once attended a gig that could only be described as an evening of pirate metal. The music wasn't bad, but the audience was the real attraction. People danced and jumped and hollered until the playful turned to the embarrassing. Sadly, I don't have any video of the some of the most striking performances.

By now, readers will remind me that Whispered is not a pirate metal band. I understand that, but I'm imagining an audience reacting to this band's self-styled "samurai metal." Would the dancing be even more interesting than that of the pirate metal crowd? I'll let you know as soon as the band rolls into Utah.

For most listeners, it's curious to note that this band hails from Finland. There are obviously no geographical restrictions on interest in samurai but it's honestly not every day one writes about a band like this. Fortunately, the band has a good sense of humor and seems as sincere enough where it counts.

As for the music, it's big and bold and playful and fun. The style has echoes of the aforementioned pirate metal in that the music is a blend of extreme music, folk music, and a kind of symphonic metal overlay that holds it all together. Whispered has done well over the years and this album should attract even more listeners. Check out "Strike!," "Sakura Omen," and "Bloodred Shores of Enoshima" (a larger than life 11-minute piece).
