What do you get when you toss psychedelia, prog, punk, ambient, metal, industrial, space rock, and indie into a blender, swirl it all up, and pour into a glass? Why, Texas act Boyfrndz of course! Impulse is the latest release from this intriguing quartet, who are comprised of singer/guitarist Scott Martin, bassist Joseph Raines, drummer Aaron Perez, and guitarist Jason Erwin. The album contains 10 mostly brief tracks that vary in intensity, at times hitting on breathtaking beauty, on other occasions bursting with metallic fury but never forgetting the prog aspect, Martin's high pitched vocals always soaring over the top no matter the arrangement. Plenty of lilting guitar chords and shimmering atmospherics on "Hiatus" and "Ghosted", with the occasional thunder dropping in, while both "Little Secret" and "Bane" up the ante with some serious prog & metal riffs and hook laden arrangements. There are also plenty of textures throughout the album that create a certain sense of moodiness, as on "Gone" or "Silhouette", but the band can also go the other extreme with some math rock fury as evident by "Going Under".
While Impulse is a little 'all over the place' at times, there's still a lot to recommend here from a band who don't seem to be afraid to take some chances with their music. Check it out.
